Armor is your most important defensive investment. Each set also has set bonuses that can dramatically change your playstyle. Here's what to aim for at each stage.
Pre-Hardmode Armor

Pre-Hardmode Priority
Your early game goal is Gold/Platinum → then rush to either Meteor (mage) or Molten (melee/ranged). Molten Armor has the highest defense of any pre-HM set and can carry you to the Wall of Flesh.

Lunar Fragment Armor
All four endgame sets are crafted from 36 Luminite Bars + 45 of the respective Lunar Fragment. You get these from the Moon Lord fight and the four Celestial Pillars that precede him.
