Mage Build Guide
Mages trade defense for raw power. With the right setup, you can deal the highest DPS in the game — especially in late Hardmode where magic weapons scale incredibly well.
Class Tip
Mana management is the key to mage gameplay. Always carry Mana Potions, build a Star-in-a-Bottle at your arena, and use accessories that reduce mana cost.
Pre-Hardmode Mage
Best Weapons
- Wand of Sparking — found in surface chests. Weak but infinite use. Better than nothing.
- Gem Staff — craftable staves using gems. Diamond > Ruby > Emerald > Sapphire > Topaz > Amethyst
- Space Gun — crafted from Meteorite Bars. With Meteor Armor, it costs 0 mana — infinite DPS
- Water Bolt — found in the Dungeon. Bounces off walls, great for crowd control
- Demon Scythe — drops from Demons in the Underworld. Piercing projectile, very good DPS
- Bee Gun — drops from Queen Bee. Homing bees, excellent against the Wall of Flesh
Best Armor
- Meteor Armor — 16 defense, Space Gun costs 0 mana. Arguably the best early game mage setup
- Jungle Armor — 17 defense, 9% magic damage, 6% crit, reduces mana cost
Mana Setup
- Use Fallen Stars to craft Mana Crystals at a Demon Altar (3 stars each)
- Max mana is 200 — consume Mana Crystals until you stop gaining mana
- Build a Star-in-a-Bottle at arenas (50 mana regen from falling stars)
- Carry Mana Potions, but don't use them too often (Mana Sickness debuff)
Hardmode Mage
Best Weapons
- Cursed Flames / Golden Shower (early HM) — cursed flame spread (Corruption) or ichor stream that reduces defense (Crimson). Golden Shower is one of the best support weapons in the game
- Sky Fracture (early HM) — fires three homing beams. Crafted from Light Shards + Souls of Night
- Magnet Sphere (mid HM) — drops from Dungeon's armored skeletons. Orbs your position, great for stationary damage
- Shadowbeam Staff (post-Plantera) — bounces off walls. Excellent in Dungeon and enclosed spaces
- Spectre Staff (post-Plantera) — homing bolts, pairs with Spectre Armor
- Razorblade Typhoon (post-Duke Fishron) — homing projectiles, one of the best mage weapons in the game
- Nebula Blaze (endgame) — high damage homing projectiles
- Nebula Arcanum (endgame) — lingering explosive projectiles, massive DPS against large targets
Best Armor
- Hallowed Armor (mid HM) — 50 defense, Holy Protection dodge, generalist option
- Spectre Armor (post-Plantera) — two sets: Spectre Hood (lifesteal, lower damage) and Spectre Mask (damage focus). Switch between them based on the fight
- Nebula Armor (endgame) — 46 defense, massive magic boost, Nebula Boost (pick up boosters for damage, regen, and mana)
